Kalinga Real Estate

Tucked in between the stately suburbs of Clayfield and Wooloowin, Kalinga is the inner-city Brisbane suburb you’ve never heard of. Kalinga, a residential suburban locality in Wooloowin, is 7km north of Brisbane. Its northern boundary is Kedron Brook, along which is the extensive Kalinga Park. Home to the heritage-listed Kalinga Park, it only reclaimed its identity as a suburb in 2015, after the state government altered Wooloowin’s boundary on Brisbane’s north side.

Kalinga History

The origin of the name possibly derives from an Aboriginal word ngalinnga, indicating belonging to us.

Kalinga Park was officially opened as a reservation area in 1910 for residents of Nundah, Wooloowin and Eagle Junction. These areas were close to the railway line, and Kalinga remained undeveloped until the interwar years. In 1926 a bus service to Kalinga began, and in 1929 it was replaced by a branch tramline from Lutwyche Road to a terminus in Shaw Road.

Presbyterian and Anglican churches were opened in 1928 and 1934. The Catholic church in Nelson Street included a Franciscan Sisters of Mercy mission in Kedron Lodge (1860), the heritage-listed Colonial Gothic house built for Judge Alfred Lutwyche. Shops ran along Lodge Road, and there was a local cinema continuing into postwar years.

During the war Kalinga Park, in the vicinity of the Toombul railway station, was used as a staging camp. Courtney oval, in the vicinity of Shaw Road, was used by the Australian Special Wireless Group. The community’s open space was Melrose Park, which includes the Kalinga bowling club.

Kalinga has a mixture of interwar Queenslander houses and more recent flats. It ceased being a separate suburb and became part of Wooloowin in 1975, it only reclaimed its identity as a suburb in 2015, after the state government altered Wooloowin’s boundary on Brisbane’s north side.

Things to do in Kalinga

Kalinga is close to many great outdoor activities for the whole family. Kalinga Park is kid-friendly park with themed play areas, and with barbecues (electric), basketball half court, bikeway, car park, cricket field, cultural heritage site, dog off-leash area with agility equipment and a a dog off-leash area for small dogs (Bertha Street) with bubbler/tap/dog bowl, hockey fields, outdoor fitness/exercise trail, path network, picnic area/shelters, and tennis courts, Kalinga Park is well loved by locals and people coming into the suburb. It is also home to the Brisbane Petanque Club, Queensland Miniature Race Car Club, and the Wooloowin Scouts.
Melrose Park also a local fav includes community organisations and facilities for the Kalinga Bowls Club.

You will also find Kedron Brook Bikeway a haven for cycling and hiking.

The community fought very hard to get Kalinga reinstated as a suburb. It’s quite a distinctive area and a really unique little pocket. Outside demand for Kalinga real estate is overwhelming due to its close proximity to the CBD, large volume of high-end homes, multiple recreational facilities, and reputable community spirit.
