Northgate Real Estate
Northgate sits a comfortable 9 kilometres north of the Brisbane CBD, directly on several major train lines. This makes Northgate’s transit service one of the most frequent and convenient in all of Brisbane, with many express lines also stopping at Northgate.
A quiet, unassuming suburb, Northgate is primarily residential with a little industry tucked in by the railway. The suburb has seen its share of greatness, with Northgate State School’s previous students include the famed Gibb brothers, of pop group the Bee Gees.
Northgate History
Northgate began in 1882 as a stop on the Sandgate railway line, as a workshop for making signaling equipment. Originally called Toombul, the station was renamed Northgate Junction as new rail lines opened, the name derived from North Coast and Sandgate.
Northgate’s residential development got off to a slow start despite land subdivision on offer in 1890. Most early housing in the area dates from 1910 onwards. The area’s flourishing industries and gradual addition and improvement of services fueled residential demand. Development of local shopping and Northgate Primary School in 1959 allowed the suburb to be more self-sufficient.
It was deemed a mature suburb by 1970 and the 1990’s saw it being marketed as a cheaper option to Clayfield.
