Chermside History
Originally named Downfall Creek, Chermside was renamed in 1903 to honour the Queensland Governor of the time, Sir Herbert Chermside. The scenic suburb features many parks also named after local historical figures, including William Kidston (former Premier of Queensland) and F.W. Bradbury (an early Alderman of the Brisbane City Council). Several historical churches remain in the area, the most long-standing being the United Free Methodist Church, established in 1873.
In addition to its rich heritage, Chermside has also consistently been a hub of progress. Chermside’s commercial district has been home to Australia’s first drive-in shopping centre, Brisbane’s first Apple Store, and Queensland’s largest shopping centre.
Demographically, Chermside has a vibrant and diverse community. A boom in population numbers has been fueled by developers and the need for more housing close to major shopping and transport. Outside of the development zone, affordable homes on good sized blocks of land are still readily available.
