Wavell Heights History
The Wavell Heights area has strong Aboriginal history, evidenced by important sites such as the bora ring at Nudgee Waterhole. Following European settlement, Wavell Heights was orignally known as West Nundah until 1941, when the Brisbane City Council renamed it to honour Field Marshall Lord Wavell in the Second World War.
Early days saw it settled by farmers producing pineapples and dairy. Following the war, the influx of returning servicemen led to a surge in housing development, as well as other amenities to make Wavell Heights truly feel like home. 1948 alone saw the construction of both Wavell Heights State School and a community centre that included a hall, kindergarten, court, girl guide and scout huts, bowling green and tennis courts.
